E-Newsletter

Here’s what to do: ·   Craft a general article/announcement to the attention of all students. ·   Please only run ONCE per month (January, February, March) OR in the newsletter that gets the most student attention in the January-March timeframe. (Probably February as that includes the exam schedule.) ·   Please also include what NSSE-promo activities are planned for your Faculty, keeping in mind that all promotional activities must follow the Protocols, which are included in the hard copy version of the Toolkit and available at http://nsse.info.yorku.ca/nsse-toolkit/. ·   You can also add in any changes that were made in your Faculty based on feedback from the 2011 survey AND any information about what you plan on doing with the data from the 2014 survey. ·   If you or anyone in your Faculty needs clarity on whether or not your plans to promote participation in NSSE is acceptable, please contact the steering committee under Richard Smith, who is following the guidelines from both NSSE’s ethics group and York’s Ethics Review Board. Here is a template of an article. Edit as needed. Suggested title: Calling students: York needs your feedback and advice! By now, unless you’ve been avoiding e-mail, social media and classrooms, you’ve probably seen or heard something about the National Survey of Student Engagement – NSSE (pronounced Nessie) for short. And if you’re a student in the first- or final-year of a four-year program, you received an e-mail from President Shoukri on February 11, with a link to the survey. (If you didn’t see it, you might want to take a peek in your spam folder.) What all the fuss is about NSSE is one of the most important surveys York participates in. It gives you, our students, the opportunity to tell the administration what you think of your undergraduate experience, the kinds of activities you’re engaged in and how you’ve benefitted from your studies. What’s in it for you York is committed to using the NSSE results to help design the programs and activities that our students most need and want. But in order to do that we need good data.

We can do (a lot) better

In 2011, the last time the survey was conducted here, York’s overall participation rate was 17 per cent – lower than the Ontario average and our principle competitors. Our goal for 2014 is to increase that rate to 35 per cent, which is in line with the Ontario average. Generally speaking, the more respondents a survey gets, the better quality data it yields. That’s why we’re aiming for high participation rates on the 2014 survey. But we listened anyway Even though we didn’t get as many respondents to the survey as we would have liked in 2011, we listened to what students had to say. As a result, we implemented improvements to our student services such as more relaxation spaces on campus for commuter and residence students, York’s RED Zone and enhanced OSAP administrative processes. More feedback on the 2014 survey could help us make even more changes at York. Take 30 minutes to invest in your future It only takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete the questions on the survey. Then, once you’re done, you can enjoy a FREE latte from Starbucks OR Tim Hortons OR a $5 York Lanes Gift Card (while supplies last). You could also win a tuition waiver, a “Top-Up” on your YU-Card or a Keele/Glendon Bookstore Coupon. You’ll find all the details at http://nsse.info.yorku.ca/prizes-rewards/. Your Faculty needs you! To encourage friendly competition, the York administration has inaugurated the NSSE Champion Cup. Similar to the York Torch, the Faculty with the highest participation rate by the end of the survey period in March will be awarded the Cup by the President. The winning Faculty gets to keep the Cup – and the bragging rights – until the next round of the survey in 2017. You can follow how our Faculty is faring in the race for the Cup at http://nsse.info.yorku.ca/see-how-were-doing/. For more information about the NSSE project at York, visit yorku.ca/nsse. What not to do:

·   Please do NOT address to individual students.
